About this course

The course “Sustainability in K12 Education” is offered by the SEE Nexus Institute and designed for K12 teachers and professionals working at K12 schools. In a world which faces significant environmental challenges, professionals in fields as diverse as Engineering, Education, Finance, Healthcare, Transport and Management can no longer continue to work in the same way as before. Environmental, social and economic considerations are driving people in all professions to take sustainability into account.

This course provides participants with a framework and the knowledge required to incorporate sustainability into their professional and personal lives. Participants will learn that sustainability considerations don’t only pose a threat to our ways of living and working, but present opportunities as well.

Based on the award winning Sustainable City in Dubai, the course provides a practical and actionable perspective on sustainability that can be applied all over the world.

The course consists of 12 Modules. the topics of the Modules are:

  • Modules 1-2: Introduction and the SEE Concept
  • Modules 3-9: Food, Energy, Water, Waste, Mobility, Products, Air
  • Module 10: Assessing and Measuring Sustainability
  • Module 11: Is your School Sustainable?
  • Module 12: Education for Sustainable Development

Each Module is structured as follows:

  1. Introduction to the topic of the Module
  2. Information on the Module topic and illustrations of how The Sustainable City has implemented solutions related to the Module topic.
  3. A Multiple Choice Quiz with 4 questions. Answers to each question can be found in the learning materials of the Module.
  4. An assignment that enables the learner to apply the contents of the Module to the workplace. Assignments need to be uploaded on the course platform.

Each module represents approximately 1-2 hours of learning effort and may be taken in an online only format or as part of a facilitated course.

To start using the course materials, click on “Modules” on the left hand side and then on “Intro to Climate Change and the Built Environment”. At the end of the list of Modules, there is a section for “Optional Additional Learning Materials” on different topics related to the course.
